President’s Message
Great Things Are Happening
at Sweet Adelines International
Calling all Divas!
Divas
Wanted! Our new member campaign drive is underway. We often think
of our international champions as Divas. In reality, after spending
the weekend as performers, we return on Monday morning to work,
laundry, chauffeuring our children to soccer practice, household
chores, cooking dinner, etc. etc. etc. Fortunately, Sweet Adelines
affords each of us the opportunity to become a Diva if only for
a weekend. That bit of escape can make all the difference in our
week when it comes to being bread winner, mom, grandma or what have
you. For a couple of hours each week YOU too can be a Diva. If you
love singing and performing … tell someone!
Harmonize the World!
On July 13, 2005 we will celebrate
Barbershop Music Appreciation Day. What a wonderful way to let the
world know about Sweet Adelines International. Perhaps you can arrange
to sing the National Anthem at a ballgame, perform in your local
mall or at a library or museum. Make something happen for you and
your chorus. Get the word out that Sweet Adelines International
is the largest women’s singing organization in the world and
we’re proud of it! You can walk away with new members and
a better sense of community. You may even prompt someone to hire
your chorus or quartet for a future engagement. You too can “Harmonize
the World!”
A Wealth of Education,
Performance, Competition and Fun!
Hopefully you are all sending
your directors to IES this year. Directors really are the foundation
of our choruses and the better they are the better we sing. Our
guest faculty, Rodney Eichenberger, will work with the directors
in special classes throughout the day on Wednesday. All of you can
participate in fabulous classes taught by our own primo faculty
as well. IES will truly inspire you to be the best you can be!
October 4-8, 2005, takes us
to the Crescent City. Be sure to plan a trip to New Orleans and
join us in celebrating Sweet Adelines International’s 60th
Anniversary. The convention opens with Showcase featuring “the
BUZZ”, Harborlites Chorus and the Kingston Trio. Then it’s
four days of outstanding chorus and quartet competition and the
Coronet Club Show with special guest, Pete Fountain. We’ll
wrap up the week with a “Sweet Celebration Party” on
Saturday night featuring many of our champion quartets. Mmmm, mmm,
I can smell the chicory and beignets from here.
We are truly sorry to be missing
some of our sisters in song this year. As you may know we were forced
to make a quick decision when our original 2005 venue fell through
last year. Unfortunately, the dates we were able to secure for the
convention and competition in New Orleans fall on the Jewish New
Year, Rosh Hashanah. To all our members celebrating, Happy New Year
— Shana Tovah!

A friend sent me a bonsai tree
on the day I took office as president. I’m not exactly known
for my green thumb so I was worried. I read the care and feeding
instructions and so far so good. It’s still alive. In fact
it’s growing (knock on wood). It’s a little like our
membership. Keep it nourished, watered and in the light and it will
flourish. After 32 years of being a Sweet Adeline I’m still
learning and growing and loving every minute of it. Let’s
keep those Divas coming through the rehearsal doors. Don’t
keep Sweet Adelines a secret … tell someone!
