The Fun Fundraiser ... A No-Bake - Bake Sale
Do you ever feel like you've baked and baked and baked, then gave up a Saturday to sit or stand in a booth only to find your bake sale fundraiser wasn’t very profitable? Now you’re dividing up the leftovers amongst your chorus members.
Every chorus needs a source of income, there is no debate there, but deciding what is the most fun, the most effective and how many fundraisers to get involved in can be the source of serious and heated debate in any organization. What works for one group will not work for all groups but in the Spirit of Harmony Chorus we seem to have fine-tuned what works best for us and we have certainly learned what hasn’t worked.
So this year, instead of dividing up leftover baked goods, we did our Bake Sale with a twist. We had a No-Bake - Bake Sale. The recipe was e-mailed to the chorus to bring with them a dash of friendship, a sprinkle of humor, and a smidgen of fun, along with their checkbooks. Then the Ways and Means Committee member donned her baker’s hat and went along the risers with her mixing bowl and wooden spoon in hand as everyone dropped in their donation. One was even poured into the mixing bowl right out of a measuring cup. Each cook was given a receipt for tax purposes, written on a cupcake liner, no less!
Though this might not work for every chorus, it certainly was a fun fundraiser and the very best part, no messy clean up!

Spirit of Harmony Chorus
Region 6

Encore!
Beginning in 2006, efforts were made in Region 12 to form a Young Women In Harmony chorus, called Encore! Today that chorus is singing proud with approximately 20 young ladies. All the young singers are voice students of a former member of the Bay Area Showcase Chorus, Gayle Greenbrook. Prior to starting Encore! Chorus, Gayle formed the 2005 Rising Star Quartet Champions UNDERAGE, now renamed LOVENOTES. Because of their success, many other girls within the region wanted to join the barbershop bandwagon.
Gayle recruited Cindy Gilmore and Pat LeVezu to assist in forming and coaching the chorus since this seemed to be the most effective way to introduce the young girls to barbershop. From the very beginning they decided to have the girls run the show. They chose the name Encore!, designed their own logo which is displayed on chorus t-shirts and assigned section leaders, a choreographer and even their director from the young women in the chorus. The current director is Caitlin Smith, baritone of LOVENOTES. Except for some administrative duties this chorus is run completely by the girls.
A few months ago they attended a YWIH day sponsored by Region 12. They were part of 69 kids who showed up for the event. They were asked to perform for the region on the evening show and proved to be stellar performers. They also put together three quartets for the YWIH quartet contest that night. Since they ended up being the only three competitors, they won first, second and third place, which amounted to a sizable cash prize. The quartets gave all the prize money to their chorus, Encore!, and are excited about being able to purchase new costumes and music. The region was very impressed with the quality of sound for such a young chorus. Seventeen members, ranging in age from nine to 19 were in attendance for the YWIH day. The majority of Encore! members are 15 years old and under. This is a group that is one to watch!

PILOT PROGRAM LAUNCHES MAY 1, 2009!
Thanks to the volunteer pilot program regions the real women. real harmony. real fun. campaign is about to take flight by piloting a new, innovative approach in marketing. More than 95 percent of the chapters within Regions 5, 7, 15, 17, 25 and 34 will be representing Sweet Adelines International by participating in the 2009 Pilot Program, Increasing Membership Together with One Message, One Voice.
As this one solid message is delivered consistently to the public, reflecting the organization as a whole, it is likely to generate an increase in public awareness for our organization and choruses. If the Pilot Program is a success, we hope to influence all regions to participate in this unified marketing campaign.
We wish the real women of these innovative regions real harmony and real fun as they join together in an attempt to improve membership growth and retention like never before.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all of the Pilot Program choruses, plus each and every chorus member for dedicating her time and passion to advancing our organization!

Resources Page
The Resources page of the Marketing Center offers beneficial items that can assist in building a successful membership campaign. Members will find survey and spreadsheet templates, plus compelling testimonials and recruiting videos to add to their promotional efforts.
Downloadable links to a recruiting video and Young Women In Harmony Program video are available through the Resources page for members to download and place on their chorus’ Web site, e-mail blasts, e-newsletters, IPODs and more.
Members will also find a link to real member testimonials through this page of the marketing center. Using testimonials or quotes from satisfied members is one of the simplest and most effective ways of adding power to brochure, advertising and direct mail copy. Members are often the best salespeople to sell the organization to prospective members. The testimonials made available through this page are gathered from surveys generated by real members. Members are encouraged to find a quote that matches their chorus’ perso nality and culture and add it to collateral for a persuasive marketing technique.
The available guest survey template has been designed for choruses to customize and distribute to potential members and/or chorus visitors. When visitors complete surveys such as this, choruses will receive an outsider's perspective that can help evaluate where the chorus needs improvement. The visitor information spreadsheet template is a necessary tool for developing and maintaining relationships with a chorus' visitors.
By utilizing the tools in the Marketing Center choruses have already experienced successful campaign results and you can now find out how they are doing it through the Resources page. Chorus success stories will be published periodically through this Web page for the membership to review and spin-off ideas. If you would like to share your experience, or have additional questions about the campaigns, e-mail membership coordinator Ann-Marie Dowling at ann-marie@sweetadelineintl.org. Real Education
Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
For the past several years, members of Sweet Adelines International have been able to request Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for work in achieving the Certified Level of the Director Certification Program as well as participation in internationally sponsored events, e.g., seminars, workshops, and conventions.
CEUs are beneficial to anyone who has a job in which they must certify or recertify, however, CEUs are not college credit in the traditional sense. In our organization, teachers seem to be the ones that use CEUs the most. Since teachers have to earn continuing education credit for recertification, this program allows our members to count their Sweet Adeline involvement toward this.
All CEUs are processed through the Northeastern State University in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. CEU applications are available through the Education Department and the International Web site. Completed forms may be mailed or faxed, along with payment, to International Headquarters.

Seeking MENC/EMEA Award Nominees
Do you know a Sweet Adeline who is also a professional music educator? Let us know about them and they might just be the next recipient of the Sweet Adelines International MENC/EMEA Award. Nominations will be accepted through May 15 by the Director of Education at International headquarters. Click here to access the nomination form, http://www.sweetadelineintl.org/
pdf/2009MENCnominationform.pdf.
The International Board of Directors will select the recipient based on these criteria:
- Is she a member of MENC/EMEA?
- Is she a member of Sweet Adelines International?
- What has she contributed to further music education in public and/or private schools by promoting the barbershop style as an American art form?
The MENC award has been presented annually since 1992. The EMEA (European Music Educators Association) award was established in 2001. If you, or someone you know, would like to be considered for this prestigious award, please download a nomination form or contact Lori Decter Wright, Director of Education.
MENC/EMEA will send a representative to convention in Nashville to present an award plaque on the International Stage. In addition, the winner will be noted in the convention program as well as in The Pitch Pipe.
