New Convention Procedures
The International Board of Directors adopted changes for convention beginning this year of which members should be aware.

The Board agreed to a charge of $5 (USD) for name badge changes/additions, unless the change is necessitated by a typographical error. For any name addition or change, please contact Lana Clark by Sept. 1 to avoid being charged. After Sept. 1, all changes will be made on-site at the ticket office and $5 (USD) will be assessed for each change.

The Board also agreed to provide each attendee one convention program in exchange for one ticket, at no charge. Convention programs can be found in the International Sales area, ticket office and the headquarters office where they can be redeemed for your ticket or purchased for $1 (USD).

Announcing an International
Young Women in Harmony Festival

As a special feature of the convention, we are offering a one-day festival on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, free of charge to 250 vocal students grades seven through college age (through age 25). Singers in the chorus can be your daughters, younger sisters, nieces, granddaughters, students or friends. We are pleased to offer an outstanding opportunity to participate in an international barbershop chorus with rehearsals during the day, culminating in an evening performance on our popular Showcase show that evening.

Students who pre-register for the festival will be emailed a link to download from our Web site the sheet music and learning tracks for the three songs that they will perform at Showcase. The link will be emailed out the first week of September to those who have pre-registered. Participants will also receive complimentary tickets to the evening Showcase performance. (Convention registration and housing will be the expense and responsibility of the individual.) Participants should rehearse the songs before the festival, as the music must be memorized for the show that evening.

Festival clinicians will include Kim Wonders, director of the 2008 Harmony Classic Division AA Champion Chorus, Metro Nashville; and musical theater specialist Vickie Foltz. It will be a busy, fun-filled festival with much to accomplish. Click here to view a preliminary schedule for the festival. For more information and to register, download the YWIH Festival Registration Form.

Registration is open until the four voice parts are balanced or until Oct. 6. Invitations are being sent to all area junior high schools, high schools, colleges and universities in Hawaii. Applications to participate must be returned by Oct. 6 and will be accepted in the order received until the risers are full.

We hope that you will encourage the young women in your life to participate in this international festival.

Hawaii Coronet Club Show
The audience is invited to participate in singing a tribute to retiring Musical Director Renee Craig. If you plan to attend the Coronet Club Show in Honolulu, you'll find sheet music and learning tracks available on the Coronet Club Web site. Online Logins
To provide more efficient service and to minimize duplicate database records, please remember to always login with your name and member identification number when utilizing our online access for orders, convention registrations or other member needs. If the online services are used without your member id, it creates a duplicate record in the database and can impact other member services, including not receiving member pricing for products and registrations. If a new address is used for the duplicate record, your master member record will not be updated which will impact receiving postal mailings, including the Pitch Pipe.

If you have any questions about how to log in using your member id or do not know your id, please contact membership registrar Connie Heyer at 1-800-992-7464 ext. 102 or e-mail connie@sweetadelineintl.org.

Sweet Adelines Performance Opportunities at Carnegie Hall

Your Stories

Jennifer Edwards to Receive 2008 MENC Award
Jennifer Edwards, a vocal music educator and member of Sweet Adelines since 2001, will receive the 2008 MENC Award at International Convention in Hawaii.

Jennifer is in her seventh year as a vocal music educator and teaches vocal/choral music, theater, music theory, and composition. She has made significant contributions to music education in schools and promoting the barbershop art form to other music educators by:

  • Serving as Women’s Camp director for the Greater Cincinnati Harmony Festival
  • Counseling, coaching, and serving on committees for the Singing Buckeyes Harmony Camp
  • Presenting master classes to Texas State University Music Education students
  • Coaching a collegiate YWIH chorus and a recent BHS Young Harmony Champion Chorus
  • Traveling with demonstration quartets to other local schools and chapters for performances and to talk about barbershop in schools.

She was nominated by Bonnie McKibben, education coordinator for Region 17, where Jennifer retains her Chapter-at-Large membership. Thank you, Jennifer, for all of your tremendous efforts.

Maria Ovesson Named Ann Gooch Award Recipient
The dedication, passion, and vision of Maria Ovesson, Nordic Lights Region 32, earned her the 2008 Ann Gooch Award.

Maria Ovesson enjoys an enviable and outstanding reputation as a Sweet Adelines leader in Sweden and throughout the organization. She is known as the woman others call on when any job needs to be done to perfection.

She is a member of Rönninge Show Chorus and will receive her award on Thursday, Nov. 6, at International Convention. In addition to receiving a plaque honoring her achievement, a $500 contribution will be made to her chorus’ or region’s education fund. Thank you, Maria, for your outstanding contributions.

Curves Winners Gain International Recognition
The winners of the 2007 Sweet Adelines International Curves contest were recognized in diane magazine (Curves magazine) and will be spotlighted on the Curves Web site during the months of August and September 2008.

The 2008 Spring issue of diane magazine featured a short article on the first and second place winners of the weight-loss contest which included their fun stories and successful results. Check the Curves Web site at, www.mycurves.com, after August 15 to read about exciting details of the contest and participants' inspirational experiences.

Hooked on a Feeling
Oklahoma Jubilee Chorus in Region 25 and their dual chorus-sisters from Sound of the Heartland in Region 7 came together this spring for a unique performance called “Hooked On A Feeling.” The script committee came up with a comical game show theme where chorus members dressed up as a variety of wanna-be game show contestants and were selected to play the game throughout the performance. Interspersed with the questions and answers, the chorus and quartets sang correlating songs.

Audience members gave thunderous applause and after the show raved that it was our best show yet. Other audience members who had never been to one of our shows commented on how well it was written, questioned why they hadn’t heard of us before and expressed interest in attending future shows. We had a surprising turn out considering that our marketing efforts were made on a shoestring budget without spending any money on advertising. Each chorus member helped spread the word; we posted flyers in local businesses, e-mailed flyers and through press contacts acquired two televised spots on local news channels.

All who attended helped contribute to our fundraising efforts for the 2008 International Convention and Competition in Hawaii. We had a blast! Honolulu – Here we come!

Oklahoma Jubilee Chorus

The Final IES Wraps Up
We would like to thank all of our members who attended the Sweet Adelines International Education Symposium (IES). The event was a huge success with nearly 1,200 members attending. Members enjoyed captivating educational sessions, entertaining chorus and quartet competitions and influential networking forums. The symposium commenced with the opening session on the evening of July 16, where all attendees enjoyed a performance by the 2008 International Champion Quartet FOUR BETTYS.

This year the symposium was packed with more than three full days of classes, and directors were thrilled to add an extra full day of training with Dr. Jim Henry to their schedule. His sessions made a lasting impression on directors and general attendees alike as several attendees commented on how they could have returned home after his classes and feel their money was well spent. Music in the Morning retained its popularity this year with notable attendance each morning, and fresh perspectives were offered through more than 100 new classes.

And the Winners Are:
The Harmony Classic and Rising Star Quartet competitors gave spectacular performances this year at IES. The Harmony Classic competition truly presented the best of Sweet Adelines' small and mid-sized choruses, where Metro Nashville Chorus, from Nashville, Tenn., won the Division AA competition and Stockholm City Voices Chorus, from Stockholm, Sweden, won the Division A competition. The Rising Star Quartet Contest brought out the best of young barbershoppers from around the world. Taking home the gold, WHOLE LOTTA HARMONY
Quartet from Baltimore, Md., wowed the judges and audience with a stunning performance.

Congratulations to all of this year’s winners!
