2008 International Convention and Competition

That's a Wrap
No matter where or when, no matter how big or small and no matter how quickly the week goes by the Sweet Adelines International Convention never fails to leave a lasting impression on all who participate. We would like to thank all of our members and guests who attended the 2008 Sweet Adelines International Convention and Competition in Honolulu, Hawaii. This year's convention hosted more then 7,000 attendees from around the world.

Showcase
On Tuesday evening the week kicked off with Showcase, where audience members were dazzled by a spectacular blend of the finest songs and dances from each Polynesian island group. The dramatic war dances of Fiji, the mesmerizing Otea of Tahiti and the graceful hula dancers of Hawaii were but a few of the exceptional highlights. The audience was thrilled with incredible performances by the 2008 Young Women in Harmony Festival Chorus, the 2007 International Champion Quartet, SALT, the 2008 International Champion Chorus, Harborlites, and a performance by a combined Japanese chorus.

Press Coverage
This year's convention proved to be a tremendous success according to the local media of Honolulu. Although the United States Presidential election was a heavy topic in the news, local newspapers, radio stations and television programs didn't let that get in the way of covering the 2008 Sweet Adelines International Convention and Competition.

Throughout the week, Sweet Adelines International articles were found in several daily and community newspapers, including Pacific Business News, Star Bulletin, Honolulu Weekly, and the Honolulu Advertiser. Local radio stations, such as KGMZ 107.9 FM, KHBC 990 AM, and KCCN 100.3 FM also broadcast interviews with event staff and competitors. NBC's KHNL and FOX's KHON news programs also covered the event, but if you were watching ABC's KITV or CBS' KGMB on Thursday morning, Nov. 6, you would have caught exciting interviews and performances of the 2006 and 2008 International Champion Quartets, SPOTLIGHT and FOUR BETTYS.

During the convention and even now local residents of Honolulu have been eager to find out more about Sweet Adelines International and their local choruses.

Webcast
The convention was packed with four full days of exciting quartet and chorus competitions all captured on a live Webcast. The International Webcast was a huge success with more than 15,000 viewers tuning in. Thank you to all of the members and friends that generously donated to the Webcast and to the fantastic commentators, Sue Beck, Kathy Carmody, Åse Hagerman, and Chris Noteware.

And the Winners Are:
Quartet and Chorus competitors gave spectacular performances throughout the week. The judges and audience were wowed when the new 2009 International Champion Quartet, MOXIE LADIES, gave a nearly flawless performance, including breathtaking barbershop harmony and witty sidebars throughout their entertainment package. The 2009 International Champion Chorus, Melodeers, gave the audience and judges something to cheer about when 145 chorus members delivered exceptionally creative and captivating presentations. Audience choice awards were presented to the most entertaining chorus, Spirit of the Gulf Chorus, and the most entertaining quartet, CAPRI. This year's Harmony Achievement award recipient, St. Louis Harmony Chorus, was also presented with its medals.

Congratulations to all of this year’s winners!

Summer of Fun For SVC
Spring Valley Chorus was certainly feeling fit as a fiddle after our coaching session with Jim Arns and Renee Porzel at the Region 3 AIM on Sept. 13. The valuable encouragement and the fine-tuning they offered couldn’t help but build our spirits and determination to get it just right. They coach in such a positive way, leaving no doubt in anyone’s mind that anything is possible. Our participation in the evening show was the culmination of a summer of special events for us.

Besides our usual National Anthem before a July Schaumburg Flyers game, we were asked and gladly agreed to also sing the Anthem before a Chicago Bandits Women’s softball game. Of course both teams won with SVC cheering them on.

In early June we teamed up with Brotherhood of Harmony for a cabaret program. What a thrill to mix men’s and women’s voices in barbershop harmony. The song the choruses sang together was an overlay of America the Beautiful.

The season started off with an invitation to sing during the Cost of Freedom weekend in Schaumburg, entertaining the visitors who came to view the replica of the Vietnam Wall and other military services displays. We dedicated our program to the USO and they gave us an official USO banner. We felt so proud to be part of all of these fun-filled, memorable summer events.

My Journey to International Headquarters
Do you ever wonder about the ladies who keep this wonderful organization of ours humming, those names and occasional pictures that appear in The Pitch Pipe or the voice on the end of a phone call to International headquarters? In my 15 plus years as a member, I've thought on occasion that I would really like to visit our headquarters one day, but living in southern Ontario makes it near impossible. That changed this past summer. A year ago I decided to visit my brother-in-law and his family who live in Hutchinson, Kan.

My husband and I also decided to be a vendor at regional contest, which significantly increased my contact with international headquarters staff. In order to use the double treble clef logo we needed a licensing agreement. Each one of the employees that we worked with was extremely supportive, enthusiastic and helpful in guiding us through the many aspects of print advertising, Web site links, legal agreements and so on.

When we got to Kansas, we contacted Brenda Monroe and Joey Mechelle Stenner to set up a face-to-face meeting about additional ideas we had, and we wanted to be able to thank them in person. On the way we stopped in at the Hutchinson City Chorus rehearsal (thanks ladies for making me feel like I was at home) and then drove through the night to Tulsa. The next morning found us at International headquarters. When you walk in the front foyer, there are huge display cases of dolls representing every champion quartet and chorus in a replica of the actual costumes they wore when they won! It's fascinating to see the dolls from different time periods, as well as the vintage costumes and hairstyles.

We were given a tour of the building, saw the history of the organization and met practically every staff member. Despite being extremely busy getting ready for the last IES, in true Sweet Adeline fashion, they all made time for us and made us feel welcome. They couldn't believe that we'd drive the additional three and a half hours just to meet them (it was a 20 hour drive from home to Hutchinson) and we couldn't believe that none of them are barbershop singers!

As we left my newest group of Sweet Adeline friends, I marveled at how dedicated, professional and amazing the women in this organization are and felt proud to be a part of it. We all, in some way or another, have been touched by the work of the staff at International headquarters. If you get the chance, make a visit - even if it's out of the way - you won't regret it. To the staff at International headquarters, thank you for all you do and for making my visit to Tulsa a cherished memory. In Harmony,

Andrea Thorne-Percy

Young Singers Foundation

Thank you from the Young Singers Foundation
The Foundation would like to thank the individuals who stopped by our booth in Honolulu, or bid on items in the Silent Auction, or attended our wonderful Lobby Show, or donated funds through the SING e-group, or put money in the bags carried by the Friends of the Foundation at the Quartet Finals. Total collections in Hawaii exceeded $36,000 from the Silent Auction, Quartet Finals, Lobby Show, Regional donations and the SING List.

It is through your support and the efforts you make in giving back to the organization that so many educational and personal opportunities have been funded by the Foundation. Your commitment and support allows the Foundation to award scholarships and grants each year.  The Foundation has come a long way since it's founding in 1992. We're confident that by working together, the Foundation will reach new heights in serving its mission and reaching its goals.
