Encourage and Cheer On Singers:
Sweet Adelines International A Cappella Unleashed YouTube.com Competition
June 16 – July 18, 2008
By now many of you may have heard about the Sweet Adelines International A Cappella Unleashed Singing Contest where we are giving away $1,000 to the best female a cappella vocalist through YouTube.com. Not only does this contest offer talented female singers a chance to let their voices be heard globally and win a cash prize, but it offers Sweet Adelines Intern ational an incredible opportunity to reach singers all over the world through a popular online community.
Already we have generated over 19,000 views to our Youtube.com channel and more than 4,500 views of the actual contest video. These results are overwhelming and women of all ages who have never heard of Sweet Adelines are taking notice. We would like to continue to add to these numbers with your help!
Use your talented voices to spread the word to others and cheer on contestants. With your enthusiasm and encouragement you can build confidence in these contestants and motivate them to learn more about our organization. To show your support click on the following link, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THtF4SiuxCU and scroll down to view the video responses. Each video response is a contest entry. The winner of the contest will be determined by the highest number of views, so by viewing these video responses you will increase each entrant's chance of winning. Pass your favorites on to friends and family to view, post inspirational comments and send messages to individual contestants. They all need your help and as the Sweet Adelines community roots them on it will leave lasting impressions on all involved.
Don't forget to tell your family, friends and prospective members who may be interested in entering to go to our Web site at www.sweetadelineintl.org or to our
Youtube.com page at www.youtube.com/
SweetAdelineIntl to find out how to enter.

International
Convention and Competition
Nov. 4-8, 2008
Hawaii Convention Center
Honolulu, Hawaii
Get ready for what is likely to be the most exhilarating and
thrilling competition to date. There will be great seating right in front of the stage,
five big screens (instead of only two as in previous years), extra speakers
providing enhanced and superior sound quality and no matter where you
sit you are never more than 175 feet from seeing the action onstage
or on the big screen. Care has been taken to design the seating to avoid sight line issues caused by the support pillars in the hall.
The Hawaii Convention Center combines the modern requirements of a state-of-the-art meeting facility with the beauty, comfort and culture that are uniquely Hawaii, all within walking distance of several of the Sweet Adelines’ hotels. A live feed of the competitions will be provided in the Harmony Bazaar area and the venue will cater to its guests with first-class facilities — escalators, restrooms at every turn, enhanced low lighting making it easier to find your seat, a range of food vendors to choose from and wireless Internet connections.
Combining
an excellent location with 10,000 of the world’s most fabulous
women is sure to create once-in-a-lifetime memories. Register today!

New
Convention Procedures
The International Board of Directors adopted changes for convention
beginning this year that members should be aware of.
The Board agreed to a charge of $5 (USD) for name badge changes/additions,
unless the change is necessitated by a typographical error. For any
name addition or change, please contact Lana Clark by Sept. 1 to
avoid being charged. After Sept. 1, all changes will be made on-site
at the ticket office and $5 (USD) will be assessed for each change.
The Board also agreed to provide each attendee one convention program in exchange
for one ticket, at no charge. Convention programs can be found
in the International Sales area, ticket office and the headquarters
office where they can be redeemed for your ticket or purchased for $1
(USD).
Announcing an International
Young Women in Harmony Festival
As a special feature of the convention, we are offering a one-day festival
on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, free of charge to 250 vocal students grades
seven through college age (through age 25). Singers in the chorus can
be your daughters, younger sisters, nieces, granddaughters, students
or friends. We are pleased to offer an outstanding opportunity to participate
in an international barbershop chorus with rehearsals during the day,
culminating in an evening performance on our popular Showcase show
that evening.
Students who pre-register for the festival will receive music and a learning CD for the three songs that they will perform at Showcase. The music and learning CD will be sent out the first week of September to those who have pre-registered. Participants will also receive complimentary tickets to the evening Showcase performance. (Convention registration and housing will be the expense and responsibility of the individual.) Participants should rehearse the songs before the festival, as the music must be memorized for the show that evening.
Festival clinicians will include Kim Wonders, director of Sweet Adelines International Chorus Metro Nashville; and musical theater specialist Vickie Foltz (click here to view YWIH Festival co-director biographical information). It will be a busy, fun-filled festival with much to accomplish. Click here to view a preliminary schedule for the festival. For more information and to register, download the
YWIH Festival Registration Form.
Registration is open until the four voice parts are balanced or until Sept. 15. Invitations are being sent to all area junior high schools, high schools, colleges and universities in Hawaii. Applications to participate must be returned by Sept. 15 and will be accepted in the order received until the risers are full.
We hope that you will encourage the young girls in your life to participate in this international festival.

Velvet Hills Recognizes 150 Years on the Risers!
The year was 1958. It cost three cents to send a first-class letter, while a gallon of gas cost 24 cents. In Colorado Springs three young ladies were drawn in by the sweet sounds of Sweet Adelines. Many things have changed in the last 50 years: we send letters through e-mail now and we all know what the cost of gasoline is today, but one thing has not changed. Those three young ladies, Shirley Janssen, P at Tyree and LaNell Rockwell are still singing for Sweet Adelines International in the Velvet Hills Chorus!
These three women all joined for various reasons, but when asked why they stayed they all have very similar responses: the friendship and camaraderie of other women. Although, Pat Tyree admits, “It’s hard work being a Sweet Adeline," that hard work has always been sweetened by devoted friends, laughter and precious memories over the years. Shirley recalls singing in a muumuu while on the Hawaiian shore. LaNell will never forget winning in her quartet, SNOW TONES, while pregnant – and falling up the stairs to receive her medal! All three couldn't fail to mention one of their happiest memories when they won a medal at the 2003 International convention.
It was a thrill to see LaNell, Shirley
and Pat standing and singing alongside rookies and women of all ages
as they competed in Salt Lake City in May and won their regional championship! Velvet
Hills congratulates all the competitors in Salt Lake City this year,
and in particular we celebrate with these three special ladies. We hope there are many more favorite memories for Pat, LaNell
and Shirley as we all prepare for the International
stage in Nashville 2009.

Jumpstart Your New Membership Campaign
By now most of you have heard about the new membership campaign, real women. real harmony. real fun. Through graphics and photos the ultimate goal of this new campaign is to capture the true essence of today's Sweet Adelines. You are a group of passionate, fun-loving, and all around devoted women who love to sing and it shows! Your attitude, presence and personality are magnetic and by displaying that radiant nature through campaign photos women of all ages will be drawn in so they too can feel the joy that Sweet Adelines members share.
By
combining the campaign design with an effective promotional plan, each
chorus will increase its chances of bringing new faces into its
rehearsal. Many of you may be thinking to yourselves, “easy
for you to say,” and that is why International headquarters
has developed an online members-only marketing center that will provide
choruses with the tools and resources necessary to implement and execute
a successful membership campaign. Choruses that take time to delegate
responsibilities among their members and do the necessary research
will be amazed at the results. After August 15, check the Web site
to access the new marketing center. In the meantime here are a
few basic tips to get you started:
- Create customized promotional materials from the campaign graphics made available through the new marketing center, such as brochures, flyers, postcards, guest passes, business cards, etc., that include your chorus' contact information. To save money most computers come with standard programs now where you can design and print these materials on your own.

- Assign different members every week to post flyers and pass out brochures in high-traffic businesses throughout your city and surrounding communities.
- Start developing an online presence by creating your own Web site (if you don’t already have one), building a Myspace.com or Facebook.com page for your chorus and staying active on them, and visiting targeted Web sites and blogs where you can post messages and comments about your chorus.
- Collect contact information from as many media sources in your local area as you can obtain, such as newspapers, television and radio news stations, magazines, and local Internet media sources. Maintain and update this contact list regularly.
- Once a month create a newsworthy event, such as “Free Voice Lessons,” “Free Membership Trial Period,” or “Special Guest Night Rehearsal” and plan extraordinary activities during that rehearsal to grab media attention and ultimately attract visitors.
- Wear a visible item such as a t-shirt, hat, bracelet, or pin that displays the campaign graphics so that when you are in public it is easy to bring up as a topic of conversation.
- Every time you are in contact with a new prospect, whether it is over the phone, through e-mail or in person – try to obtain their contact information. Maintain a database or spreadsheet of all your prospective members so that you can contact them regularly with updates and exciting chorus events.
These are only a handful of general marketing tactics that you may consider using to jumpstart your membership drive. Several more similar ideas can be found through the resources available on the new members-only marketing center. The marketing center will also store downloadable campaign graphics and templates that will offer the flexibility for choruses to design promotional materials suitable for their unique needs.
Continuous updates will be made to the marketing center, including current press release topics, revised templates, new graphics, helpful articles, and more. You can also help International headquarters expand its photo library and develop attention-grabbing campaign materials by taking photos of your chorus members and e-mailing them to the membership coordinator at ann-marie@sweetadelineintl.org. We are looking for natural, candid shots of the real women of Sweet Adelines International. Take pictures at rehearsal, backstage before a performance, or even when you are out shopping with Sweet Adelines friends.
Have
fun, keep singing, but most of all be proud of the real
woman you are!

Young
Singers Foundation
Recently,
one of our members and a truly wonderful friend, Jessie Alford, passed
away. She was an inspiration to all of us and in honor of
Jessie many of her home chorus members, together, contributed approximately $400 to
the Young Singers Foundation. The photo shows Jessie with two of her
closest friends doing what every woman loves to do
– shopping. From left to right, it shows Laurie Johnson (current member
of Jacksonville Harmony Show Chorus), Holly St. John (Director of Women
of Note), and Jessie.
Jessie
Alford was a friend, a wife, a mother and a grandmother, but most importantly
her life was centered around sharing harmony with the world. Jessie
never met a stranger. She was outgoing, fun, intelligent, and a dedicated member of the Song of St. Johns chorus directed by Holly St. John. She was
a charter member of this chorus and the very first president. In fact,
she was instrumental in the creation of this Northeast Florida chorus.
She later became a valued member of the Jacksonville Harmony chorus.
No
one was a bigger ham than Jessie. She loved being center stage whether
in chorus shows or at regional performances. Everyone in her hometown
and in the region knew her.
She
had tireless energy and enthusiasm for Sweet Adelines and it never waned.
Even when her failing health made it impossible to sing and perform,
she still made it her business to attend regional and International
competitions to root for her favorite choruses.
Jessie
had planned to attend the International competition in Calgary, but she
passed away at the end of October. We will all miss this special woman
for she and many others like her are what make our organization what it
is today.

can help talented young people obtain a quality music education too. Please
