Convention and Competition
Nov. 4-8, 2008
In case you haven’t heard, all competitions, performances and Harmony Bazaar will be held at the Hawaii Convention Center — all under one roof.
Our professional staff of convention and competition planners just returned from the Island with wonderful and exciting news about the venue.
Get ready for what is likely to be the most exhilarating and thrilling competition to date. You haven’t seen a live competition like this before! There will be great seating right in front of the stage, five big screens (instead of only two as in previous years), extra speakers providing enhanced and superior sound quality and no matter where you sit you are never more than 175 feet from seeing the action onstage or on the big screen. Care has been taken to design the seating to avoid sight line issues caused by the support pillars in the hall.
That’s not all! The Hawaii Convention Center is convenient and within walking distance of several of the Sweet Adelines’ hotels. The Hawaii Convention Center combines the modern requirements of a state-of-the-art meeting facility with the beauty, comfort and culture that are uniquely Hawaii. A live feed of the competitions will be provided in the Harmony Bazaar area and the venue will cater to its guests with first-class facilities — escalators, restrooms at every turn, enhanced low lighting making it easier to find your seat, delicious food vendors and wireless Internet connections.
For competitors the Hawaii Convention Center will offer the best traffic pattern in years!
The organization will be saving thousands in busing costs by moving the entire convention and competition to the Hawaii Convention Center. And the venue will allow fire dancers on the Showcase stage — so don’t forget to purchase your tickets today!
Combining an excellent location with 10,000 of the world’s most fabulous women is sure to create once-in-a-lifetime memories.
Register today! Prime seats are selling fast! To

Showcase 2008 will launch convention week on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, 8:00 - 10:30 p.m. in the Hawaii Convention Center. Featuring 2008 International Chorus Champion, Harborlites Chorus, the 2007 International Champion Quartet, SALT, a performance of combined Japanese choruses, and Polynesian entertainment, this year's Showcase will include a variety of extraordinary talent. The dramatic war dances of Fiji, the mesmerizing Otea of Tahiti and the scorching fire-knife dance of Samoa are but a few of the exceptional highlights. You won't want to miss this once-in-a-life-time entertainment package.
HOTEL RESERVATION ALERT
Convention Attendees & Exhibitors:
We would like to make you aware of a situation that has been brought to our attention. There is a company, Convention Expo Travel based out of Henderson, Nev., which has been contacting our attendees and exhibitors to assist with hotel reservations. They are disguising themselves as the Sweet Adelines International Housing Bureau. They are claiming they can get better rates, that rooms are limited or other sales pitch methods. They are NOT the official housing bureau and are NOT affiliated with Sweet Adelines International in any way.
If you receive a call from this company claiming to represent Sweet Adelines International, be aware that this is not sanctioned and DO NOT MAKE THE RESERVATION. Convention Expo Travel is NOT affiliated with Sweet Adelines International in any capacity. The Sweet Adelines International official Housing Bureau is Experient. Experient will book rooms at the hotels within the block with previously negotiated rates that Sweet Adelines International has contracted years in advance. The Housing Bureau will never contact you via the phone and solicit your business. They will contact you via phone only if you contact them and ask them to return your call.
If you have already made hotel reservations through Convention Expo Travel, Sweet Adelines International is unable to guarantee the validity of the reservation. If you would like to cancel your reservations, please contact the hotel directly. Additionally, contact your credit card company and tell them NOT to pay the 20% penalty if it is put through by Convention Expo Travel. Please contact the Meetings and Corporate Services Director, Kathy Hayes at Kathyh@sweetadelineintl.org with any questions.

Dedicated With Love to The Spirit of the 2008
Sweet Adelines International Convention
It is truly a pleasure for Pride of Portland to present our beloved organization with the gift of
Aloha`Oe, arranged by one of our members, Kay MacDierney. As those of you who have traveled to Hawaii know, the people, energy, and spirit of the islands is unlike any other on earth. Paired with the love, joy, and harmony that Sweet Adelines embody, our upcoming International convention should prove to be a magical event - not only for those of us fortunate to be competitors, but for all who will take part.
You will find all of the tools you need to learn the song at www.alohaoearrangement.com which we created solely for the purpose of sharing with our sisters. You will find learning tracks, a pronunciation guide and sheet music.
We hope you will enjoy learning Aloha`Oe and find time during our week together in Hawaii to say hello to us and other sisters in song and sing through this wonderful work.
In Harmony,
Ryan Heller, master director

Coming Home to TuneTown Show Chorus
After three years I decided it was time to get back to doing what I love - singing! Coming from several different large choruses I have been the new girl a few times before. It happens to be one of the things about joining a group that isn't always the best. It usually takes a few weeks if not months to break into a clique, find a new friend or just feel welcome and a real part of the team.
That wasn’t the case at all with TuneTown Show Chorus. Coming to TuneTown was like coming home! All the women pushed those first couple of weeks aside and on day one, I was part of the team. I was greeted by two of the most inviting, non-intimidating and comfortable women I have ever met. While walking toward the director for my introduction, and without the slightest bit of exagge ration, I was greeted, welcomed and even hugged by at least 10 people. It took us a solid five minutes just to get across the room!
After making my way to meet our director Sher, I was amazed at how sincerely happy she seemed to meet and welcome me to her chorus. She stopped what she was doing and made it a point to give me her complete attention. I always assumed it was just a technicality to be introduced to the director as a guest, if she or he has the time at all.
I have no doubt that I talked with at least half the chorus that first night and made friends with everyone around me. Numerous people gave me a plethora of information and always made sure I didn't have questions. I made it through the first night with no anxiety, no pressure, no uncomfortable glances and completely psyched about coming back the next week. I was hooked. Yes, I can say after one night, I knew this was so much more than a chorus!
I’ve heard TuneTown Show Chorus has been attracting new members rather rapidly compared to others over the last year. Well, if all other choruses knew TuneTown's secret, the entire organization would be growing faster than you can say "Sweet Adeline stroll."
Many thanks from one of TuneTown's newest members.

Young
Singers Foundation
YSF Supports Broadway on the Driveway
Due to the generous support of the Young Singers Foundation, along with contributions from several other individuals and organizations, Broadway on the Driveway, a Christian Theatre Company, presented Singin' in the Rain free of charge on July 20, 21, and 22, 2006, at the Pillsbury Chapel and Dale Williams Fine Arts Center at Missouri Baptist University in Chesterfield, Mo. Over 2,500 people attended these three performances. The cast, crew and orchestra consisted of over 75 people. In addition to performing in the show, each cast member supported and/or served on the production team, assisting in every area behind the s cenes. The cast members learned some beautiful chorus numbers. We had some very patient six-and seven-year-old children who also learned to sing in four-part harmony. There were 12 dance numbers in this production, and over half the cast learned to tap dance.
In 2006 after the production of Singin' in the Rain, Broadway on the Driveway was awarded the Missouri
Senatorial Resolution, which recognizes their contributions to the arts in their community. We feel extremely blessed to receive support from the Young Singers Foundation. Thank you for all you do to encourage and inspire young people to develop their musical gifts.
