Nominee
Application Deadline Extended
The 2008-09 Nominating Committee has agreed to extend the deadline for
the receipt of potential nominee applications for two positions on the
International Board of Directors until May 30.
The
International Board agreed in 2008 to reduce its size from 14 members
to 12 members. As a result, the Nominating Committee will choose the
names of four applicants to appear on this fall’s ballot for elected
positions that begin May 1, 2009, and end April 30, 2012. The Board
will continue to appoint annually two members to serve one-year terms.
Nominating Committee Chair Cammi MacKinlay strongly encourages any member
interested in serving the organization at the International level to
request an application packet from headquarters. Contact the corporate
secretary at 800-992-7464, ext. 139 or by e-mail to anita@sweetadelineintl.org.
"The
International Board of Directors is made up of women just like you -
dedicated, energetic, passionate ambassadors of Sweet Adelines International,"
Cammi says. "When we were approached to put our names forward as potential
nominees, I'm sure that each of us thought, ‘Wow! Me? Maybe someday, but
I'm sure I wouldn't be picked now!’ And yet, someone believed in us enough
to recommend us for the slate. The same thing can happen to you! Please
consider nominating yourself or someone you think would have a
positive influence on the organization. We'll all be glad you did."

2008 - 2009 Committee Members
This month marks the beginning of a new fiscal year and your new international committee members are anxious to serve. Click on the following link to review who your new committee members are this year, http://www.sweetadelineintl.org

Where
Are You, Award Prospects?
We know you’re out there. To you the phrase, "All cows eat grass"
makes perfect sense because you’re a music educator. We’re looking for
you so we can tell you about an award that you might be eligible to
receive. You could be the next recipient of the Sweet Adelines International
MENC/EMEA Award.
The
corporate secretary at International headquarters will accept nominations
through May 30. The International Board of Directors will select the
recipient based on these criteria: Is she a member of MENC/EMEA? Is
she a member of Sweet Adelines International? What has she contributed
to further music education in public and/or private schools by promoting
the barbershop style as an American art form?
This
MENC award has been presented annually since 1992. The EMEA (European
Music Educators Association) was established in 2001. If you, or someone
you know, would like to be considered for this prestigious award, please
contact Anita Larsen, corporate secretary, at headquarters to receive
a nomination form.
MENC/EMEA
will send a representative to convention in Hawaii to present this award
on stage on Saturday, Nov. 8.

Everything’s
Coming up Roses at the New England Flower Show
Region 1 members were still experiencing the chills of winter and
mounds of snow, yet it was anything but dreary during the massive
2008 New England Flower Show at the Bayside Expo Center in Boston,
Mass. The New England Spring Flower Show has become the true symbol
of spring’s arrival for almost 100,000 winter-weary New Englanders
and Boston visitors. The show is now in its 137th year and has grown
to be the third-largest flower show in the world.
Throughout
the event, Region 1 Sweet Adelines groups gave invigorating performances
in front of exceptionally large audiences. Performing were Profile Chorus,
MIXED
NOTES Quartet,
BOSTON
ACCENT Quartet,
ALAK AZAM!
Quartet, Cranberry Shores Chorus, CELEBRATE!
Quartet, Rhythm of New Hampshire Show Chorus, Merrimack Valley
Chorus, A CUT ABOVE
Quartet and NUANCE
Quartet. Hundreds of Flower Show attendees were dazzled by our energetic,
ringing music!
Not
only did our groups enjoy a fantastic venue and receive incredible
enthusiasm from the show attendees, our organization got some amazing
exposure. We gave away piles of brochures from our chapters and International
headquarters, as well as promotional CDs and The Pitch Pipe
magazine. Many ladies came to speak to us before and after performances
to inquire about our chapters. Several music teachers took time to
tell us how impressed they were and inquired about the Young Women
In Harmony program and chapter programs. A few people simply said
they had no idea that this is what Sweet Adelines was all about.
The
New England Flower Show was an inspiring experience for all of us
involved and we hope we have inspired others to join.

Rich-Tones
Knit One Purl Two
Besides keeping up with our weekly rehearsals (and all the other things
Dale and Ruth Ann throw our way), several members of the Rich-Tone Chorus
are very busy these days learning how to knit and c rochet.
After
the emotional experience of losing a treasured long-time Sweet Adeline
member, Theresa Hammer, several members wanted to carry on her generous
spirit by knitting shawls for ill and distressed people in her honor.
This was one of Theresa’s most important and far-reaching ministries
and now her legacy of the healing prayer shawls continues.
After many
lessons at the home of Toby Lederman, the Stitch-Tones group
was born. We soon realized that an area larger than a kitchen table
was needed for our projects and moved the group to our rehearsal hall.
We discovered even more members who could crochet but not knit and vice
versa. Skills were exchanged and now with over 20 of us knitting and
crocheting, we are producing
prayer shawls regularly.
We
recently had a "Blessing of the Shawls" ceremony at one of
our regular rehearsals. One of our members, Naomi Ware, a breast cancer
survivor, explained the meaning of the shawls and who they were intended
for. As the chorus stood and held hands, a simple prayer was recited.
It was quite memorable — a moment Theresa would have enjoyed.
We have found this a wonderful way for us to show our Rich-Tone love.
More information on our shawls is available at www.shawlministry.com/instructions
or you can e-mail tobylederman@hotmail.com.

Alyson
Chaney Remembers
The Ann Gooch Award will be presented at the 2008 international convention
in Honolulu, Hawaii. Ann Gooch, a past International President and
long-time International Board member, was a driving force in the development
and growth of Sweet Adelines International beyond its North American
borders.
Alyson
Chaney, Region 31, received this prestigious award in 2007. This is
what she remembers about receiving the honor, "I was completely
overwhelmed by the news from our International President Pat LeVezu
that I had won the award for 2007. It was and is a huge honor considering
the great names that have preceded me as recipients: Britt-Helene
Bonnedahl, Ase Hagerman, Cathy Rainey, Kate Veeder, Elise van Ruth
to name but a few.
As
my chorus, the Lace City Singers, was competing in Calgary in 2007,
I knew that I would have 86 of my dearest friends in the audience
as well as many friends from Region 31 who would be watching the Web
cast so avidly. It was certainly a moment to treasure. However, receiving
the award would not have been possible without the support of my wonderful
Region and the many opportunities that this organization has offered
me through the years."
A
$500 donation will be given to the education fund of the recipient’s
chapter or, if the recipient is a Chapter-at-Large member, to the
recipient’s region’s education fund.
If
you would like to recommend a member of your chapter, region or area,
please click on the following link, http://www.sweetadelineintl.org/SINGAPRIL/
2008AnnGoochAwardRecommendationForm.pdf to submit her name and
qualifications on the recommendation form. Eligibility requirements
are:
1.
Recipient must be a member in good standing of Sweet Adelines International.
2. Recipient must be a member in good standing of a chapter, or Chapter-at-Large,
in the Satellite area or Regions 31, 32, 34, or 35.
3. Through her talent and dedication, the recipient must have made
outstanding contributions to the furtherance and development of Sweet
Adelines International and the barbershop style as an American art
form in her chapter, region or area.
Nominations
will be accepted through May 30, 2008. To request an application or
to obtain more information about the Ann Gooch Award, please contact
the corporate secretary at 800-992-7464, ext. 139 or e-mail to anita@sweetadelineintl.org.

Young
Singers Foundation
Bev
Sellers Memorial Scholarship Recipient
Megan Lyne from Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisc., explains the value of music in her life, "I
cannot imagine a more rewarding calling than my own: the art and inherent
joy of singing. For all my life, I have been aware of my career goals
to be a classical musician. I have also been determined to continue
my education in order to elevate my talents to an even high er
level. Earning my Masters Degree in Music has always been my plan.
For
as long as I can remember, my life and the ideal musical career have
paralleled one another. It may have helped that both of my parents
are very musical people. When most parents are busy choosing names
for their new addition, mine were occupied with selecting which piece
of music should be first to grace my newborn ears. (They chose Aaron
Copland's 'Appalachian Spring'). Music never stopped in our home,
and many of my
favorite childhood memories include attending performances, rehearsals,
and music lessons.
As
a musician and performer I have found delight in teaching young musicians
to appreciate and love singing; helping them to develop their gifts
and talents. The rewards in having students are endless. I am eager
to continue studying to develop my ability to be a talented and effective
teacher and mentor. As I look back and recall my undergraduate studies,
I am proud of the growth that I have made as a person and as a musician.
I am eagerly looking forward to the immense possibilities my graduate
studies will offer."
You can help talented young people obtain a quality music education.
