Background Facts for
Sweet Adelines International

Achievement:

Sweet Adelines International, a nonprofit music education association for women founded in 1945, endows its nearly 30,000 members with a mastery of four-part harmony, barbershop style. Performances and competitions develop members' confidence and pride in their achievements. Sweet Adelines perpetuates barbershop music--one of the original forms of music native to the United States.

Community Needs:

A Sweet Adeline chorus is a musical asset to its community. Geographically, there are Sweet Adeline choruses located throughout the U.S. and more than ten other countries. Sweet Adeline choruses regularly entertain at civic events and charitable functions. Proceeds from performances are often shared with scholarship funds, health care and social services programs, and the arts and humanities. Sweet Adelines promotes harmony, friendship, self-esteem, and the sense of belonging among women of all ages, races, ethnic backgrounds, and levels of performance readiness.

Innovation:

Sweet Adelines has implemented a program that enhances musical excellence and education for classroom-based vocal music programs. Young Women in Harmony is an outreach program for secondary school through college-level voices. A member-developed music educator kit is provided free of charge to those interested in the program. The kit contains a student songbook, educators' guide, and a videotape. Additional music and other program materials are available from Sweet Adelines International.

Mobilization:

As Sweet Adelines International grows in size, stature, and scope, it remains committed to recognizing talent within its membership. Local choruses are the laboratories where members receive basic training in barbershop harmony. Materials that support music education have been created by members. Programs designed and developed internally identify and train members as music leaders and teachers, contest judges, arrangers and administrators. These opportunities for growth and volunteer commitment are available to all.
