Placing
in the top three
in every international
quartet competition
since 1982, Jubilation
finally took home
the gold in 1985.
Asked to comment
on the quartet's
sucess, Carol Ann
said, "We're
a unit and that's
what it takes to
be a truly warm,
fulfilled quartet.
Not one of us is
a star." Karen
stated, "We
have total dedication
to our goals, but
not at the expense
of our choruses
or our families."
Jubilation took
competing and performing
seriously, with
a written agenda
for each two-hour
rehearsal. Note
learning was done
at home from tapes
or at the piano.
Pat didn't read
music and learned
her part from tapes
exclusively - but
was usually the
first to have her
part memorized.
Karen, who at the
time directed Melodeers
Chorus (Northbrook,
Illinois), usually
chose the music
and found arrangements
for the quartet.
Carol Ann, Melodeer's
assistant director
and choreographer,
worked on gestures
and staging. Pat
kept the books and
handled sale of
recordings. Sharon,
a professional cosmetologist,
worked with the
quartet on makeup
and grooming and
compiled their extensive
history book. Jubilations'
1986 advice to new
and aspiring quartet's
still holds much
value: "Have
fun!"
