Detroit
City Tour
This tour includes the history of Detroit beginning with the formation
of the Great Lakes and the Detroit River during the Ice Age. From
COBO Hall, we travel along Jefferson Avenue, past Hart Plaza where
annual river front ethnic and musical festivals are held and past
the former site of Fort Pontchartrain. See the Stroh complex area,
complete with townhouses, office building and riverfront hotel as
you make your way to Belle Isle. Belle Isle is the largest city-owned
island park in the country.
After Belle Isle, the group will see the city's "Gold Coast",
including a drive through historic Indian Village. This neighborhood,
with its early 1900s mansions built by auto industry pioneers, is
still majestic with tree-lined streets.
We then drive through the Lafayette-Elmwood urban neighborhood on
our way to historic Eastern Market, the indoor/outdoor farmers'
market dating from the 1800's. The tour continues through the Medical
Center, the first planned Cultural Center in the country, and into
the city's New Center. Here we tour the Fisher Building, a true
"gem" of Detroit.
Next we travel through the Entertainment District and see the several
restoration projects - Fox Theater, Gem, Century Club, State Theater
and the Detroit Opera House. The tour passes Comerica Park, the
new home of the Detroit Tigers baseball team and Ford Field, the
new home of the Detroit Lions football team. Then it's on to Harmonie
Park and Greektown before returning to COBO Hall.
Per Person Cost:
$29.00 before Convention
$32.00 at Convention
Tour Includes:
Motorcoach transportation and local tour guide.
Frankenmuth
Tour
Frankenmuth (www.frankenmuth.org),
90 miles north of Detroit was settled in 1845 by Franconians from
Bavaria. Additional German settlers followed. For many years after
1900, German was the principal language of the community. German
Olde World atmosphere is evident in the architecture and the dress
of many residents.
After lunch, we visit Bronner's (www.bronners.com)
Christmas Wonderland. Over 50,000 Christmas ornaments and decorations
are displayed and available for sale. These range from tiny hand-carved
figures to life-size scenes. Also over 250 decorated Christmas trees
are displayed.
After the tour, we will enjoy lunch at the Bavarian Inn. Their 35-bell
carillon in the Glockenspiel Tower plays melodies on the hour followed
by a presentation of carved wooden figures depicting the legend
of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Nearby is a replica of the 1800s wooden
covered bridge.
From Bronner's we travel to downtown Frankenmuth where you will
have a chance to browse through the more than 100 gift shops.
We depart around 3:30pm and return to Detroit.
Per Person Cost
$65.00 before Convention
$69.00 at Convention
Tour Includes:
Motorcoach transportation, lunch at the Bavarian Inn plus time for
shopping at Bronner's and downtown Frankenmuth.
