Headquarters has received a number of heartfelt messages from members. Usually,
our tax exempt status limits fund-raising efforts on behalf of
other organizations. However, because of this unprecedented disaster,
the Internal Revenue Service is allowing 501(c)(3) organizations, such
as ours, to conduct fund-raising efforts not previously allowed.
It is important that these unusual activities be undertaken only in
regard to this special relief effort. These activities are a deviation
from the activities of which the IRS is aware and should be undertaken
with great caution.
New guidelines are available for chapters and regions regarding
fund-raising for other organizations.
Please contact Donna Kerley, Director of Finance and Administration,

if you have any questions regarding disaster relief fund-raising.
Guidelines for Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief
Fund-Raising
Chapters and regions may conduct fund-raising efforts or earmark
targeted funds for disaster relief, but only in regard to this special
relief effort for Hurricane Katrina victims. The funds must be
raised to benefit another qualified disaster relief organization
exempt from federal taxation under section 501(c)(3), etc. Funds
may not be raised and provided to specific individuals or targeted groups
of individuals.
Chapters and regions may promote their fund-raising events and identify
which qualified disaster relief agency will benefit from the funds such
as Red Cross, Salvation Army, etc.
Examples of appropriate fund-raising efforts:
Donations of proceeds from benefit performances
Direct contribution from chapter or regional general funds
Selling wrist bands or appropriate products
Collection of clothing and durable goods for distribution to a qualified
agency
Please contact Donna K. Kerley, Director of Finance and Administration

We actively encourage our members to join in the relief efforts by making
a donation to support the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Click
