The Sounds of Music - 1974

Jean Pyles Barford, tenor
Gloria Laquaglia, lead
Edie Walters Moorehead, baritone
Judy St. John, bass

From: Dayton, Ohio
Convention City: Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The Sounds of Music won two gold medals at the same competition when their chorus, Gem City, won the chorus competition. Jean Barford is another of the six Sweet Adelines to win gold medals as both a chorus director and quartet member. Judy served on Sweet Adelines' international board of directors for 20 years.

The quartet organized in 1969 and had already earned the admiration of audiences from Hawaii to Washington, D.C., when they won the contest in 1974. While waiting in the Milwaukee airport for their return flight home from the competition, they sang and talked to everyone, including Doc Severinsen of NBC's "Tonight" show. The quartet actively entertained audiences across the nation for 17 years, until their retirement in 1986.
