The
Tetrachords had
competed internationally
four times before
winning. One year
later, a week after
their champions'
farewell performance
at the 1979 convention
in their hometown
of St. Louis, they
returned to the
hotel convention
site to sing for
another convention
being hosted there.
Bob Hope was on
the program but
the quartet members
were unaware he
would have dinner
with them. They
had learned Hope's
trademark song,
Thanks for the
Memories, for
their farewell performance
as champions, never
dreaming they would
sing it for the
man who made it
famous. Hope was
charmed.
Having
entertained for
ten years, including
stateside USO shows
and performances
across the United
States, the quartet
retired in 1983.
Home chapter to
all four members
was Kirkwood (Missouri),
which later become
the St. Louis Harmony
Chorus. Sandi directed
the chorus for many
years and is still
directing today.
Her parents, Jan
and Stan Johnston,
were longtime barbershoppers
in Sweet Adelines
and SPEBSQSA.
