From:
Missouri, Michigan,

Convention City:
New Orleans, Louisiana
In
1991, Susan and
Nancy wanted to
sing together. Due
to the distance
between their homes
in St. Louis, Missouri,
and Grand Rapids,
Michigan (about
450 miles), they
chose a central
location to audition
singers for the
tenor and baritone
parts. Penny, from
Chicago, won the
tenor spot. Baritones
auditioned in all
three states and
St. Louis came up
the winner with
Donna.
Because
they are separated
by many miles and
are able to meet
for rehearsals only
on weekends, they
chose the name Weekend
Edition. Scheduled
at least six months
in advance, rehearsals
and coaching sessions
involve flying two
or three times monthly,
hence the quartet's
motto: "This
is the most fun
we'ver had for $2,000
a month!"
Comedy
and humor headline
for Weekend Edition
in performance as
well as life. They
say if they had
gotten together
in 1980 rather than
1991, the quartet
would have consisted
of an opera singer,
two leads and a
tenor. By 1996,
Penny was a vocal
coach and Sweet
Adelines chorus
director (Prairie
Echoes Chorus, DeKalb,
Ill.): Susan (the
former opera singer)
a self-employed
speech pathologist;
Donna a high-school
math teacher and
math department
chair; and Nancy
a bookkeeper and
retired chorus director.
Weekend
Edition maintains
a full schedule
of performances
across the country.
The quartet represented
Sweet Adelines International
at the 1996 Guinness
Roaring '20s A Cappella
Festival in Killarney,
Ireland.
